| This is just my *least*
favourite sort of pub for eating. It's the best possible
place to meet people who are arriving in Brighton by
train, as its right next to the station and is large
and uncrowded, but for eating food in - oh no.
I've eaten in Grand Central twice. The first time we
were trying to have a sunday roast - something which
is reputed to be quite good in this pub - but they were
only doing paninis. I object to paying over a fiver
for a bit of grilled bread with a minute amount of filling.
The second time was on a normal weekday, when I paid
over £5 again for a 'tart' that can only be described
as the size of the average beermat. The other offerings
were very insubstantial looking - overpriced, with complicated
descriptions designed to part you from your cash with
as little in return as possible.
The venue itself is a large pub with a central bar.
There are big squashy sofas - which you can't lean back
in if you want to be able to hear any of your friends
talking - and low tables - awkward to eat off. The very
definition of style over substance. The bar does cocktails,
expensive pints, and little else.
The one positive thing about Grand Central is its roof
terrace, which is a well-kept secret. On sunny days,
this is a delight - I might be drinking there, but I
certainly won't be eating my lunch there. Oh, and it's
got wireless internet access, if you're so inclined.
