| I was lucky enough to be
taken here for a birthday treat. The Tin Drum has three
venues, one in Seven Dials (which was where I visited),
one in Kemptown and one in Hove. I imagine they're all
pretty much the same but with different 'specials'.
The Seven Dials Tin Drum is a little bit like Grand
Central in flavour, but done infinitely better.
It's a medium sized pub which has been renovated thoughtfully.
The oak tables are clean, the waitress-service is fast
and efficient, and there's something deeply satisfying
about having your pint brought to your table, rather
than having to fight for it at the bar. They also serve
a decent cocktail menu, all priced at about £5,
and have a classy toilet. It's the sort of place you
could take your mum where she wouldn't be horrified
at the state of the loos. Although she might be horrified
at the size of the bill - it is a little bit more expensive
that your average pub; but a lot less than a fine dining
restaurant, and you get what you pay for in this place.
I had the classic nut roast sunday lunch. It was extraordinary
- really standing out in flavour, composition, and presentation.
There's also a good starter and dessert menu; something
often lacking in a pub lunch. My creme brulee was perfect,
although my memory of it is a little hazy having sampled
a couple of cocktails by this point. Main meals are
priced at about £8/£9.
My one criticism would be the layout, being slightly
overcrowded with furniture so that you might end up
in the middle of the floor, rather than in a cozy nook
for two.
